DC ARMORY TO HOST BIPARTISAN CONGRESSIONAL FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM AND U.S. CAPITOL POLICE SQUAD IN LONGEST YARD CONGRESSIONAL FOOTBALL GAME OCTOBER 27
Former NFL players Ken Harvey, Gary Clark, John Booty and Ed Lee join congressional playmakers Heath Shuler and Jesse Jackson, Jr. in charity flag football game
Washington, D.C. – The Washington Convention and Sports Authority (WCSA) announced that the Longest Yard Congressional Football Game will be held at the DC Armory on Tuesday, October 27.
Benefitting the Capitol Police Foundation and the Washington Literary Council, this is the fourth edition of the gridiron showdown between the bi-partisan team of congress members and the athletic Capitol Police flag football squad and the first time the charity flag football game will be held in an indoor facility.
Doors open at 6 p.m., pregame festivities begin at 7:15 p.m. and kickoff for the charity game is 7:35 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome. Attendees may enter into a drawing for an autographed football at the conclusion of the game.
“This is a fun and spirited rivalry on the football field but all parties are coming together to benefit worthy causes, and the WCSA and the city are proud to be part of this effort,” said Erik Moses, Managing Director of the WCSA Sports, Entertainment and Special Events Division. “We encourage everyone to come out and enjoy a great event.
Beginning at 6:30 pm, the NFL and the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation will host children from the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington for a free NFL PLAY 60 Redskins Youth Fitness Zone clinic. PLAY 60 is the league’s youth health and fitness campaign focused on encouraging children to be active for at least 60 minutes a day.
Budweiser is hosting a pre-game tailgate for local veterans and wounded warriors from Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Medical Centers, in addition to special seating for these veterans at the event.
Several former NFL players will be moonlighting as coaches and players, including John Booty (Eagles), Ken Harvey (Redskins), Ed Lee (Lions) and Gary Clark (Redskins). In 2007, the Capitol Police edged out a Rep. Heath Shuler-led team of die-hard congressional playmakers. Will 2009 be the year of the comeback?
With Potomac pride on the line, both teams play hard to win – but the ultimate winners are the charities for which they are playing: The Capitol Police Foundation, providing assistance to families of their fallen officers and the Washington Literacy Council, raising the literacy level of adults and children in the nation’s capital.
This year’s event is sponsored by the NFL (Signature sponsor), Anheuser-Busch Inc. (Hall of Fame sponsor), Roll Call, Washington Convention and Sports Authority, ManTech, ESPN, Marriott International, Congressional Federal Credit Union, UnderArmour, VOX Global, Comcast, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, Dudinsky, Lisker & Associates, East Coast Industrial Supply, Inc., National Beer Wholesalers Association, Diageo, Imperial Headwear, SGMA International, MaxMuscle of Manassas, Stracka Design Company, Twenty-First Century Group, AT&T, Southern Company, JAKA Consulting, Fantappers, Ironcutter Media and CarePoint Diamedix.
The DC Armory is easily accessible by the Metro on the Blue and Orange lines (Stadium-Armory station) and numerous bus lines. Event parking is also available.
