RFK STADIUM TO HOST U.S. MEN’S NATIONAL TEAM WORLD CUP QUALIFIER VS. COSTA RICA
WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. Soccer Federation today announced RFK Stadium will host the U.S. Men’s National Team in a World Cup qualification match versus Costa Rica on October 14. Kickoff time and ticket information will be announced at a later date.
Last October, RFK Stadium hosted a Semifinal Round World Cup Qualifier between the United States and Cuba, which saw the U.S. advance to the final round of qualifying with a 6-1 win before 20,293 fans.
RFK Stadium has hosted the national team 18 times and has been the site of 11 U.S. wins – more than any stadium in the world. Overall, the U.S. is 11-3-4 at RFK with an average attendance of 30,526.
The U.S., along with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago, is competing in the 10-game round-robin format through October 14. The top three teams automatically advance to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The fourth-place team will compete in a two-game playoff to be held November 14/18 against the fifth-place finisher in South American qualifying.
