SIDWELL FRIENDS WINS TEAM TITLE AT 2009 ARMY STRONG D.C. WRESTLING CLASSIC PRESENTED BY THE DC SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT COMMISSION
Gonzaga’s Paul O’Neill named Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning 112-pound weight class and leading the Eagles to 2nd place finish

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With wins in five of 14 weight classes, Sidwell Friends School captured the overall team title in the 2009 Army Strong D.C. Wrestling Classic presented by the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission at the Washington Convention Center. Gonzaga High School finished second and the Model School for the Deaf edged Georgetown Day School for third.

Gonzaga sophomore Paul O’Neill was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler following victories over Ryan Sanford of St. John’s High School, Michael Burley of Sidwell Friends and St. Albans School’s Beau Young by pin in 3:53 in the championship match.

“Today’s invitational featured nearly 100 wrestlers from D.C. high schools, a lot of energy and really spirited competition to qualify for the national prep championships,” said Erik Moses, Chief Executive Officer of the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission. “The DCSEC continues to be a strong supporter of youth sports in Washington, D.C. and we were honored to host such a great event.”

All individual winners advance to the National Prep School Wrestling Championships to be held February 19-21 at Lehigh University.
