Despite Great Turnout, Game slips from DC Armor
*Busy day on RFK Stadium-DC Armory campus features D.C. United victory
*Nationals defeat Baltimore Orioles in exhibition finale at Nats Park
(Washington, DC) – It was a busy night on the RFK Stadium – DC Armory campus and at Nationals Park. The DC Sports and Entertainment Commission operates RFK Stadium and the DC Armory and serves as the landlord of Nationals Park.
DC ARMOR DROP HOME OPENER
The DC Armor, Washington, D.C.’s indoor football team, dropped their home opener to the Reading Express, 39-19, before a spirited crowd of 2,114. Reading quarterback Rob Flowers passed for 156 yards (18-for-33) with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Flowers also rushed for two touchdowns and 34 yards. In his DC Armory debut, the Armor’s Mike Scipione passed for 150 yards (14-for-31) with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Reading is 3-1 and the Armor fell to 1-2.
D.C. go-go legend Chuck Brown performed at halftime followed by a special performance by the Eastern High School band.
The Armor’s next game is at the DC Armory against the Fayetteville Guard on Saturday, April 11.
D.C. UNITED GET FIRST WIN
Luciano Emilio scored his second goal of the season early in the second half to give D.C. United its first win, 1-0, over the Houston Dynamo before 12,594 at RFK Stadium Saturday night. The win was the United's first in two years over the Dynamo (0-2-1), who put all their shots on goal in the second half. United goalkeeper Louis Crayton made four saves in his first shutout of the season. The United (1-0-2) return to action at Real Salt Lake next Saturday.
NATS BEAT ORIOLES IN EXHIBITION FINALE
Josh Willingham hit a grand slam and later drove in the go-ahead run in Washington's 5-4 victory over Baltimore in the teams' exhibition finale Saturday. Willingham also contributed a diving catch in the sixth, sprinting to Felix Pie's sinking liner in foul territory. The Nationals open their season at the Florida Marlins Monday and host the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies in their home opener on April 13.
DC ROLLERGIRLS IN CHERRY BLOSSOM PARADE
The DC Rollergirls didn’t have bout action on Saturday night but the derby divas were not idle. A 25-woman contingent participated in the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade Saturday morning, one of Washington, D.C.’s signature springtime events. The DC Rollergirls play their bouts at the DC Armory, with the next bout scheduled for Saturday, April 18. The league championship bout is Saturday, May 9.
